After Sharon Stone bared her soul - and body - for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar, three Mail readers took the daring decision to follow suit.

Inspired by the Basic Instinct actress's tasteful nude black and white photos, the middle-aged women agreed to bare all.

Here, the women reveal why they are proud to show off their bodies and how they keep their figures in check.

My hair’s grey but I haven’t lost my waist

Mercedes Yoshioka, 57, a dance teacher, lives in Central London with her husband Hideo, a stockbroker, and has a son, Max, 25, and daughter, Thais, 19. She is 5ft 7in, 8st 4lb and a size 8 to 10.

She says: I saw Sharon Stone by chance two years ago in Daniel Galvin’s London hair salon.

While she didn’t look as picture-perfect as in Harper’s Bazaar, she’s a beautiful woman.

When the magazine came out, my daughter told me: ‘You look much better than her.’ I’m not sure that’s true, but it was a lovely compliment.

I’m tired of hearing of women who claim to feel invisible in their 50s — too old to be attractive. I just don’t believe that’s true.

Only in Britain do women resign themselves to being ‘past it’ at 50. When I go to New York, Australia or southern Europe, I see older women who look incredible.

None of us, including Sharon Stone, look like 20-year-olds, but so what? You can be beautiful without being youthful.

I started dancing at 19 and have been active all my adult life, teaching dance as part of my personal training.

I’ve always eaten well and, five years ago, cut out gluten, dairy and alcohol.

I feel — and look — better than I have in years. For breakfast, I have millet bread with avocado, lunch is a boiled egg and cucumber and dinner is wokfried salmon and vegetables.

I remember my mother, who was always beautiful, saying: ‘What you do to your body when you’re young, you pay for later.’ I heeded her advice.

It’s important to always look my best, and I’m used to people complimenting me on my looks — often, it’s my grey hair they remark upon. My husband says my body is ‘divine’, which, after 28 years, is wonderful.

Although I don’t have the figure I did in my 20s, I haven’t lost my waist. My weight has always been stable: the worst thing you can do is yo-yo, as it leaves the skin stretched and saggy.

I don’t do much cardiovascular work as I think it can be ageing. Instead, I do squats, push-ups and lift weights.

I’m confident I’m in the best shape I could be, which is why I posed for this shoot. I hope it sends a message that you can look great at any age — and it’s not just Hollywood stars who should celebrate their fiftysomething bodies.

Wrinkles are nothing to be ashamed of

Sylviane Degunst, 57, a children’s author, lives in North London with her husband René, 55, a financial strategist, and their daughter, Zoe, 23. Sylviane is 5ft 7in, 7st 7lb and a size 8.

She says: I have always been slim: it’s largely down to my genes. My mother is just the same, as was my grandmother.

I used to cycle every day and have recently started running in the park — not so much to get fit, but because I spend long hours at my computer.

Our bones become thinner as we age and I’ve heard weight-bearing exercise, such as jogging, is good for keeping osteoporosis at bay. At 57, this is something women like Sharon Stone and I have to be aware of.

The nude photograph of Sharon is lovely. I’ve no doubt it’s been Photo-shopped a little, but it shows that women really can look good at any age. I remember friends getting upset when they turned 40 and started to see wrinkles and grey hair. My hair turned from auburn to white at 18, so I’ve never associated it with getting old, nor have I ever dyed it.

Such things are a mark of how long we have lived and the experiences we’ve had. I’d never use Botox. I don’t like what I’ve seen it do to the beautiful faces of so many women. It seems to take something away from their personalities.

I’m fortunate that I’m comfortable in my own skin. My body has served me well for 57 years, and I’m not ashamed of it.

Friends tell me I have good legs, but I’m proud to say I’ve had more compliments on my joyous, optimistic outlook.

It’s far more important to me to feel happy inside than to look good on the outside — though I think the two are probably linked.

My husband says I’m beautiful, too, but after 33 years, he’s not very objective!

I don’t drink alcohol, have never smoked and I have always eaten healthily. For breakfast, I have muesli or toast and for lunch, salad with couscous. Afternoon tea is a banana with almonds and a biscuit, and dinner is grilled prawns or curry.

I don’t deprive myself of anything: I have two squares of dark chocolate every day.

Luckily, I’ve never aspired to age like a Hollywood star. I’m happy to be like my mother who, at 74, is living life to the full.

Who cares that I’m not 21 any more?

Susanna Forbes, 57, a pilates and yoga instructor, has two adult children and lives in Surrey with her company director husband David, 63. She is 5ft 9in, 9st 4lb and a size 10.

She says: Younger women often tell me they hope to look as good as I do when they’re my age. It’s a difficult one to respond to: they obviously think I’m knocking on a bit, but don’t look too bad on it!

But I give little thought to my age: I feel no different to 20 years ago, and I’m fairly confident about showing my body. However, I do worry that, unlike Sharon, I look a little flabby — the effect of a loss of elasticity, which comes with age.

I’m way past 21, though, so I don’t expect to look like I did then. And my husband is very complimentary: most days, he tells me that I’m sexy or beautiful, which is lovely.

As for Sharon Stone, she looks fantastic. It annoys me when people say she looks ‘surprisingly’ good — I know plenty of beautiful fiftysomething women, so I don’t see any need to add the caveat ‘for her age’.

If you eat healthily and do toning exercises, such as pilates and weight-training, you can look good at any age.

I’ve been exercising and eating well for 30 years, since realising I was overweight after my youngest was born. I began aerobics and loved it so much I trained as an instructor.

I’ve taught pilates and yoga, as well as being a personal trainer, and also walk my dogs every day.

I’m a vegetarian and eat whatever I fancy. Breakfast is toast and yoghurt, lunch is cheese on toast and, in the evening, I’ll have pasta, curry or chilli.

Over a week, I drink two bottles of wine, though I always have at least two alcohol-free days. I’m in bed by 10.30pm and get up at 7am.

I never go to bed without cleansing and moisturising — a habit my mother instilled in me. I don’t use expensive products, just Nivea or Boots own-brand, and I’ve never had Botox or fillers.

If I had Sharon’s budget, I might be tempted to gild the lily. But I make the best of what Mother Nature gave me.
