Handbags are the accessory that most of us will take everywhere

Now they're upping their game and proving more useful than ever

The new styles look ordinary at first glance but have hidden features

By TESSA CUNNINGHAM FOR THE DAILY MAIL

Handbags — they go everywhere with us and we’d be lost without them. Not only do they help transport our myriad lipsticks, half-full water bottles and single gloves from A to B, they’re also an intrinsic part of our fashion identity.

Now, they’ve upped their game and are proving useful in other ways. There’s a new breed that look ordinary enough at first glance but, on closer inspection, have hidden features: they’ll recharge your iPhone, tote your gym kit in secret compartments or even double as outerwear. Tessa Cunningham tried a few for size . . .

CARRY AND WEAR IT

This is a bag that becomes outerwear in a matter of seconds.

Peel open the Velcro on the shoulder bag, undo the zip and you’ve got a gilet with 22 pockets (pictured above right), designed to hold travel essentials such as your laptop, iPad, iPhone, passport, purse, toiletries and books. It also claims to have room for holiday essentials such as flipflops, swimsuits and T-shirts.

To my delight, I manage to squeeze in every single item from my handbag as well as my laptop, books, all my toiletries and two changes of clothes.

The downside is that when I stand up, I’m so top-heavy I almost fall over. And with all those pockets, I look like Bob the Builder. However, my other half fell on it with glee. So we know who’ll be carrying all my underwear and toiletries on our next trip.

DOGGY BAG

This faux crocodile-skin design comes in a range of bright colours and is so convincing as a conventional handbag that fans have been known to use it to sneak pets inside restaurants.

The Monaco has carry handles and a detachable shoulder strap. Inside, there’s an animal-print lining and a fleece carpet which can be removed for easy cleaning. One end unzips to reveal a mesh window so Fido can take in the view. And you get a side and front pocket for your phone and credit cards.

Milo, my cockapoo, tried to squeeze inside, but he was too big — the bag is for dogs up to 18lb. But my neighbour’s Jack Russell fitted perfectly. However, I soon realised the drawback. Although I’m used to toting a heavy handbag, carrying a small dog is a weighty prospect, and a short trip down the street to post a letter was the furthest I fancied. Unless your dog is tiny, you won’t want to go far.

BURGLE-PROOF BAG

This nylon shoulder bag is no eye-catching designer piece, but that’s the point. For it’s the James Bond of totes, ordinary-looking from the outside but bristling with technology to foil would-be criminals.

The bag and strap are re-inforced with stainless steel wire mesh to resist a knife attack. Inside, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) blocking material will stop anyone using scanning equipment to steal your personal details from your credit cards or passport.

To deter pickpockets, zippers attach to a security hook. And zippered inner pockets provide room to stow your phone, jewellery and iPad. I road-tested it on a day out shopping in London. While I felt mugger-proof, the bag is more suited to a hike in the wild than a night on the town. And all those zippers made it a chore to get at things when you want them.

GYM BUNNY

If you live in dread of accidentally pulling your sports bra out of your bag in the middle of the office, look no further. This roomy tote looks like a smart leather work bag, but it will take you from the office straight to the gym.

The secret is in the clever compartmentalisation. There’s a space for your gym kit, a pocket for your trainers, a water bottle holder, a sleeve for your yoga mat and a zipped A4 pocket to keep documents dry and crease-free. There are also pockets for your phone and purse.

Inside, everything is made from water-resistant nylon so your belongings stay dry. Mesh eyelets in the base and trainer compartments let sweaty air out and cool air in. And the extra strong handles mean you can carry up to 40lb (18kg.)

I really put this bag through its paces. I started with a business meeting, followed by a few games of badminton and finished with a meal out with girlfriends in a restaurant. It didn’t look out of place once and I managed to accommodate not just my laptop but my handbag essentials, including purse, phone and notebook, as well as trainers, towel, T-shirt, leggings and a change of underwear.

If anything will tempt me to renew my gym membership, this bag will.

BABY ON BOARD

Baby-changing bags are usually vast, made from wipe-clean fabric and printed with girly flowers or a garish animal pattern.

This sophisticated tulip-shaped leather tote in burnt orange looks so minimalist no one would ever imagine it’s crammed with nappies, baby wipes and bottles.

There are two zipped compartments, four elasticated pockets, built-in clips which you can use to attach the bag to your pushchair, an insulated pocket to keep bottles warm for up to four hours and a padded changing mat. And it’s all wipe-clean.

When you switch to work mode, just zip open the asymmetrical outer pocket and reach for your laptop, notebook or phone.

My daughters are now grown-up, but a friend who recently had a baby managed to fit in everything she needed for a day out: nappies, a pack of wipes, a teething ring, a Tupperware tub of baby rice, two soft toys and the contents of her handbag: laptop, purse, keys.

At £175 this is the most expensive bag we tried. But it is so stylish and versatile that when you no longer need a baby changing bag, you can still use it as a beautiful leather handbag.

At last — a smart way to carry your lunch to work. This cute little tote is wipe-clean inside and out and is fully insulated.

It’s roomy enough to hold a sandwich, piece of fruit and a cold drink.

The tuna mayonnaise sandwich I had made at 8am still tasted fresh six hours later, and my carton of juice was fridge-cold.

PHONE-CHARGER

This sleek, glossy little black clutch is the ideal accessory for a smart social event.

But as well as transporting your money — there are slots for credit cards and a purse for coins — it houses a high-capacity battery and micro-USB cable to charge your phone, tablet or e-reader.

The battery, which has enough power for two full charges, tucks neatly inside, so you don’t have to lug around a power pack. When you need to recharge, simply plug the purse’s cable into your computer USB port or power adapter.

The cables take up so little room I could fit in my iPhone and credit cards, as well as lipstick, perfume and even a handful of cash.

It’s pricey, but if you often need to charge your phone in an emergency, it’s ideal.
