The senior member of the militant organisation Islamic Jihad was sitting on an orange divan outside his house when a rocket struck with clinical precision just before midnight.

Hafez Hamad was killed instantly, along with four members of his family. The area where they had been talking just seconds earlier in the sultry Mediterranean heat of Gaza was now a smoking, rubble-strewn crater.

A few hours later, a car carrying three Islamic Jihad militants was also hit and its occupants obliterated.

The same morning eight members of one family died as a missile demolished their home, and that night, a group of apparently innocent Palestinians who had gathered in a beachside bar in Gaza to watch the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Holland, were hit.

This time, according to Palestinian sources, nine people were killed.

In the first three days of its air offensive against the Palestinian militant group Hamas — to which Islamic Jihad is affiliated — the Israeli Defence Force struck more than 780 targets in Gaza, including leaders of the organisation, rocket-launchers and missiles which had been deliberately hidden among the territory’s civilian population.
